Getting your Commercial Pilots License is the next step in ones journey to becoming a professional pilot. Many people choose to obtain thier commerical pilots license for a variety of reasons. To some, its a necessary step to getting in to the right seat of an airliner, to others, it's simply away to lower thier insurance premiums on thier own aircraft. Whatever the reason, getting your commercial pilot's license will hone your skills and teach you mastery of the aircraft throughout the flight envelope. You will review familiar maneuvers such as stalls, slow flight and steep turns, however, you will also become exposed to more advanced flight manuevers that require superb seat of the pants flying as well as a refined understanding of how the aircraft will operate at various pitch-power relationships.

To obtain your commerical pilots license under part 61 you will need to have at least 250 hours total time and 50 hours of pilot in command cross country  by the time you go on your checkride with the examiner. If you already have done your instrument rating under part 61 your 50 hours of cross country time will not be an issue as it is a requirement for the instrument rating.

The bear minimum time you need to start training for your commercial pilot certificate is 220 hours and 40 hours of cross country PIC.

For your budgeting purposes expect 20 hours of flight training covering the commercial pilot maneuvers, and 10 hours of training in a complex aircraft. We will use a fixed gear Cessna 172 for the commercial maneuvers and a Piper Arrow for the complex training. The total cost per hour for the Cessna 172SP with dual instruction is $165 per hour and $180 per hour for the Piper Arrow.  Below is a rough estimation of course costs.
